Art & Design
The level of vocational skills and the impressive employment record of graduates
from Art & Design contributed to national recognition of the high quality of our
course provision by the Quality Assurance Agency. Their review also highlighted
our well-planned learning resources, particularly IT provision.
In art, craft and design, pupils explore visual, tactile and other sensory
experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. They work with traditional and
new media developing confidence, competence, imagination and creativity. They
learn to appreciate and value images and artefacts across times and cultures,
and to understand the contexts in which they are made. In art and design, pupils
reflect critically on their own and other people's work, judging quality, value
and meaning. Pupils learn to think and act as artists, designers and
craftspeople, working creatively and intelligently. They develop an appreciation
of art, craft and design, and its role in the creative and cultural industries
that enriches their lives.Art institutions are frequently involved with local
communities, organisations and businesses as a means of exploring the importance
of art in the world and its role in helping to explain human experience and the
world we live in. And this is also true in the performing arts, where
performances are not only being used as entertainment. One institution is using
theatre in prisons as a way to create better relationships between prisoners and
guards and to get across vital health care messages.Graduate programs are also
offered for continuing study in Art Education, Ceramics, Graphic Design, Art
History, Industrial Design, Metals, Painting, Photography, and Sculpture.
Graduate degrees include the Master of Arts degree in Art Education, and in the
